Cara - August Reboot

So... I am going to be writing my experiences on here and share my journey with trying to get fit!

Before Reboot I thought I was doing my best to lose weight, but nothing really worked. I live abroad, and when I came back for the summer I had a few negative comments about my weight gain.

During Reboot I was taught how to get the best from physical activities. I was very much under the impression that anything was better than nothing, and so often headed to the gym, did some stuff on the machines, felt knackered, went home and ate!
Mark showed me how to get the best from my body, and explained the science behind it.

We also worked on the mind, and I have learnt techniques for motivating myself. I think the most important thing I learnt was how to set up a goal, and then organise the small steps to take to get to this goal. So I decided my goal was to do a 10k run in 3 months time (November 5th). I cant believe I have this goal, as before Reboot I could not run for more than 5 mins!
I am making smaller goals each week to make it more managable. For instance, I am running for 1 hour and trying to increase the distance each time I do it. I like this as I feel like I have something to work for each time, rather than just going to do the same old gym routine.

The food I am eating has also changed. Everything I thought I knew about what is good for you has gone out of the window! I am eating constantly, yet all healthy food and am never hungry. I am eating 'fatty' foods like nuts and have cut out 'diet' foods like the light yogurts. I now dont look at fat content in my foods, but look at sugars and preservatives etc. I am loving eating this way.

All in all, Reboot has changed my view on everything and I feel so enthusiastic about training for a 10k run in November.

Also, whilst writing this, I realised I am not just thinking about losing weight which was always my main focus. I am thinking about training each week to get to my distance goal and eating to feel good. Losing weight will just be a great side effect of this!

I will post a blog as often as I can to let you know my progress. I will be flying back to work next week, and that will be my biggest challange. Going back to work and trying to keep a routine of training and healthy eating. Watch this space....

The dangers of fat around the middle

It has been discovered that fat around the middle quite literally has a mind of its own. Even relatively skinny people can have a bit of a paunch and they can be as much at risk as those who register as overweight on the scales.
We tend to store fat around our middle because it is close to vital organs, such as the liver, so it can be quickly converted into energy if we need it. The problem is, in Western societies today we lead much more sedentary lives than we did millions of years ago and so there’s not so much demand for this energy source - so the fat stores increase and our bellies get bigger!
The fat around the abdomen is usually accompanied by visceral fat that wraps around your internal organs. The function of this fat is to act as a shock absorber, so we need it but not in excessive amounts. Fat around the waist and belly is sometimes known as ‘toxic fat’ as it encourages an inflammatory state in the body and can increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer and diabetes.
So if you are holding onto weight around the middle make a commitment to yourself today to do something about it. A programme combining, good nutrition, positive thinking and plenty of exercise will see you well on your way to a healthier you.
